Girl biking on sidewalk critically injured after being hit by van

An 11-year-old girl is in critical condition after being hit by a van while she was riding her bike on Westwood Drive in Kitchener, say police.

Waterloo Regional Police say an 11-year-old girl is in critical condition after being run over by a van in a west end neighbourhood of Kitchener. 

The girl was riding her bicycle on the sidewalk when a 53-year-old Kitchener man driving a GMC van pulled into a driveway, hitting her, police said.

Police received a call about the collision near the intersection of Westwood Drive and Gallarno Court around 1:15 p.m. and arrived on the scene with emergency services. 

The girl was transported to hospital from the scene of the accident by ambulance and later airlifted to Hamilton, police said. 

The traffic branch of the Waterloo Regional Police is investigating the collision. No charges have been immediately laid, said police.
