Two break-and-enters in Kitchener on Tuesday night could have had deadly consequences.

Copper pipes were taken out of abandoned homes owned by the City of Kitchener at 176 and 180 Benton Street. But in order to get those pipes, the gas lines to the homes had been cut and were leaking gas.

A strong smell of gas brought police to investigate the houses, and that's when they discovered the theft. They estimate the damage at $40,000.

Police are still investigating and anyone with information is asked to get in touch or call CrimeStoppers.
