A 76-year-old man who was hit by a train while riding his bicycle Thursday afternoon has died in hospital.
Emergency crews responded to the intersection of Lancaster Street West and Victoria Street North in Kitchener at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
"He was crossing the train tracks at Lancaster Street near Victoria Street and was struck by a train," Waterloo Regional Police Sgt. Frank Heinrich said.
Robert Souliere was further down at the Via station near Weber Street and Victoria Street with his children, and said he thought something was wrong when the train was moving much slower than usual.
"We saw the light coming from Toronto and we thought it would be here really soon," said Souliere. "But it really seemed to take forever."
A section of Lancaster Street between Victoria Street and Breithaupt Street was closed for three hours as police investigated the collision.
It was opened up again at around 3:45 p.m.
