One dead in crash east of Guelph Tuesday afternoon

Police are diverting traffic off Highway 124 northeast of Guelph after a collision between a tractor trailer and a passenger vehicle.

One person is dead and a second person has minor injuries after a collision between a tractor trailer and a Dodge sedan northeast of Guelph Tuesday afternoon.

Police were called to the scene on Wellington Road 124, also Highway 124, at 12:30 p.m. The driver of the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Police identified the driver as David McCowan, 49, of Rockwood.

The driver of the transport truck is being treated for minor injuries in hospital.

Const. Joshua Cunningham with Wellington OPP said the two vehicles may have collided head on.

"We haven't ruled out speed, we haven't ruled out impairment of drivers, we haven't ruled out anything yet," he told CBC News.

Police were diverting traffic off the highway at Jones Baseline and Watson Parkway N. Tuesday afternoon.

A team of technical construction investigators are at the scene and the road will be closed until evening.

Wellington Road 124 is a busy highway regularly used by drivers heading north east of the city to Erin. The crash is near Meadowville Garden Centre and the Guelph Lakes Golf and Country Club.
