After a month of public consultation, Canada Post has decided to close its downtown Kitchener Market Square location.

"We have to look at our financial challenges and we have to look at the services that are available in the immediate area." said spokesman for the crown corporation, Eugene Knapik.

Knapik says there are 11 other post offices within 5 kilometres of Market Square. The closest full service location is in Waterloo at 66 Bridgeport Road East, and the closest retail outlet is less than a kilometre away at the Shoppers Drug Mart next to city hall on King Street West.

During the public consultation process, Kitchener council had passed a resolution officially notifying Canada Post the city opposed closing the Market Square post office.

"Well, I'm very disappointed, but I'm certainly not surprised,"  said Coun. Frank Etherington.

"Canada Post, in my opinion, has been gradually depriving Kitchener of a full-service downtown post office for many years."

The postal outlet at King and Frederick streets closes on July 19th.
