The body of a Kitchener man was pulled from Victoria Park Lake Saturday.

The man, 40, was last seen Friday night around 7:30 p.m. sitting at the water's edge at the back of Victoria Park off of Jubilee Drive, said Waterloo Regional Police Service Insp. Kevin Thaler.

Moments later a passerby saw the man's empty wheelchair on the shore and personal effects floating in the lake and notified police. The man was known to have a physical disability and used the wheelchair for mobility, Thaler said.

The Kitchener Fire Department was first to respond to the scene but were unable to locate the body during a surface search.

Niagara Regional Police Search and Rescue dive team was called to assist and at 11 a.m. Saturday the body was recovered.

"The cause of death has not yet been determined although drowning has been suspected," said Thaler.

The remains have been taken to Hamilton for a post-mortem but foul play is not suspected, Thaler said.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with related information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or the WRPS Central Division.
