The damage estimate from an early Sunday morning fire at Benny's Restaurant has been increased, and could be as high as double the initial figure.
Waterloo Fire Rescue says damage to the building located at 183 Weber Street North in Waterloo is between $300,000 and $500,000. An earlier estimate had the costs at around $200-250,000.
"There is a fair portion of the roof structure that will have to be replaced," Ken Lumgair, platoon chief with the fire department, said of the fire that was contained the attic of the building.
"The restaurant does have a metal roof on it, which is a little bit more expensive to replace than what the [asphalt] shingles would be. The water damage and smoke damage to the contents of the restaurant, all the seating and eating areas will have to be cleaned up or replaced," he said.
The Ontario Fire Marshal investigated the cause of the fire on Sunday, Lumgair said.
The details of the investigation are expected to be released at some point on Monday.
