Andrea’s Five Fun Things Do – Family Day Edition 2014

Looking for something to do this weekend? Online host Andrea Bellemare shares her five picks (and some bonus ideas) for long weekend fun.

1. Winterloo

11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m, Saturday – Monday

Various locations, Waterloo

Dog sled rides! There’s lots to do at Winterloo but dog sled rides top my list. There is also free skating, an ice slide, a photo booth, activities at the Button Factory, an ice carving competition and a chili cook-off. You can get your photo taken with malamute puppies and have that photo turned into a button. In short, many reasons to get out and about this weekend. For a full schedule go to

2. Bring on The Sunshine African Festival

10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday

121 Westmount Road East, Forest Hill United Church, Kitchener

If you’re looking to bring a little bit of sun to your family day weekend and you’re not going down south to warmer climes, why not take in some of the activities on offer for the Bring on The Sunshine African Festival? There are musical performances, face painting, workshops on hair braiding and head wraps, henna painting, pendant carving and even a drum circle, a community fashion show, and dance performances.

3. Joseph Schneider House 2014 Opening Weekend

Friday – Sunday

Joseph Schneider Haus, 466 Queen St. S., Kitchener

Free admission all weekend long! There are some great activities to check out as well. New artist-in-residence Sue Firkser offers a felting demonstration on Saturday, and official opens her felting show, Heartfelt, on Sunday. On Family Day, children’s author Frank Glew will do two presentation for the Great Backyard Bird Count (he’s the author of “That Chickadee Feeling”) and you can make bird treats to take home.

4. Family Hack Jam

Monday, 10:00 – 4:00 p.m.

The Museum, 10 King St. W., Kitchener

This tech and digital-centered event is for parents and kids 8 and up. There are electronics workshops, Lego robots, programming and website building activities, toy building sessions, even a bag lunch provided. Plus folks from Kwartzlab will be on hand to show you how to make your old t-shirt into something new and useful. NOTE: Kids must be accompanied by adults in order to participate and this event is BYOC or “bring your own computer.”

5. Board Game Bash

12:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m., Monday

Emmanuel Bible College, 100 Fergus Avenue, Kitchener, ON

It’s the first-ever Board Game Bash event, and it’s a great way to spend time inside with your family. You can “take” games out of the board game library, learn how to play them through the help of volunteers, and even take part in a tournament. The event is all-ages. The event’s game library is quite exhaustive, with everything from Apples to Apples to Wits &Wagers available.

There’s just so much do this weekend and three great days in which to do it, so I wanted to include these events too.

1. Downtown Love Skating Party at Kitchener City Hall (Friday)

2. ShipWreck! At The Waterloo Region Museum (All weekend)!-pirates--treasure.aspx

3. Weekend of Love at The Candy Funhouse in Cambridge (All weekend)
