A 14-year-old Victoria area girl is safely home with her parents after being abducted via the internet. The teenager was in the van of a 28-year-old American when police arrested him Monday at the Swartz Bay ferry terminal.

Jason Andrew Wright has now been charged with abduction.

RCMP Sgt. Bruce Brown alleges Wright first made contact with the girl through an internet chat group.

"It's a case of internet luring, gradually built up a trust with her. "They had several telephone conversations and eventually this man came to Canada and met with the young girl," he says. "She took her suitcase, her stuffed toys and her pet dog. Tt clearly demonstrates the vulnerability or naivete of young children."

Police say parents need to become more aware of what their children are doing on the internet.
