The Howdy Doody Show ran for 13 years on NBC, and was also broadcast on Canadian television, until its sign-off in 1960.

Smith and his cast of strange characters produced 2,500 live programs in front of a studio audience, known as the Peanut Gallery.

In the 1970s, there was a Howdy Doody revival. Smith and Doody launched a tour of university campuses, performing for large crowds of grateful, grownup Boomers.
