The man arrested in connection with the abduction and murder of a 10-year old girl made a brief court appearance in Surrey Monday morning. Shane Ertmoed, 23, is charged with first degree murder in the death of Heather Thomas.

The judge ordered that Ertmoed be kept in jail until his next court appearance on November 22.

The man had lived in the same Cloverdale apartment building as Heather's father. He had moved to Langley at the end of October.

Heather went missing in Cloverdale on October 1. Her body was found three weeks later in Alouette Lake.

There was a crowd of protesters at the courthouse in Surrey, demanding a national registry for known sex offenders and the return of the death penalty.
