Next week is Mental Health Week in Hamilton and Good Shepherd Youth Services is hosting a number of events to raise awareness.

From May 6 to May 10, Good Shepherd Youth Services is working with Wesley Urban Ministries and the Street Youth Planning Collaborative to host several events for young people aged 16 to 21. The organization is seeking to celebrate mental health diversity as well as draw attention to the difficulties faced by street-involved and homeless youth.

Below are details for the events, concluding with the Youth Art Show in Celebration of Youth Mental Health, which will take place during James Street North's May Art Crawl.

 

The Race 

  • What: An Amazing Race-style event where participants will visit various community-based agencies in the downtown core that could be potential resources for youth support.
  • When: Monday May 6, 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Who: All youth, ages 16 to 21.
  • Where: Notre Dame House Dining Hall, 14 Cannon Street West

 

Spa Day 

  • What: Treat yourself to a day of self-soothing spa services.
  • When: Tuesday May 7, 1 p.m to 3 p.m
  • Who: All youth, ages 16 to 21.
  • Where: Notre Dame House Community Resource Centre, 14 Cannon Street West

 

Faces of Homelessness 

  • What: An annual art event changing year-to-year, this year features silhouettes distributed by the Street Youth Planning Collaborative. Young people are encouraged to decorate the silhouettes in order to give a face to youth homelessness. Once they are collected, they will be displayed at the Youth Art Show on Friday.
  • When: The silhouette artwork is due Wednesday May 8 at 4 p.m.
  • Who: All youth, ages 16 to 21.
  • Where: Notre Dame House, 14 Cannon Street West

 

Irie Thursday 

  • What: An evening of fun recreational programming, including basketball, bingo and prizes in the spirit of "irie", a Jamaican term for "wellness".
  • When: Thursday May 9, 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Who: All youth, ages 16 to 21.
  • Where: Brennan House, 614 King Street East

 

Youth Art Show in Celebration of Youth Mental Health 

  • What: A youth-driven multimedia arts show featuring art, music, food and gift bags.
  • When: Friday May 10, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Who: All youth, ages 16 to 21.
  • Where: Urban Arts Initiative Gallery, 126/128 James Street North
