A man was taken to hospital early Wednesday morning after a nine-and-a-half hour standoff with police ended peacefully, investigators say.

Police were first called in about the incident at a home on Wentworth Street South around 1:30 p.m., Const. Jerome Stewart told CBC News.

The man had barricaded himself inside an apartment with a knife, he said.

Negotiations continued throughout the night, and then around 1 a.m., the police emergency response unit was called in.

"We entered the residence and safely apprehended him," Stewart said.

There were no injuries. A 53-year-old Hamilton man was taken to hospital for assessment.

He will not be facing charges, Stewart said.
