A Hamilton woman has been arrested after police say she beat a one-year-old dog and then assaulted a woman who tried to get her to stop.
Around 3:30 p.m. on Monday, police were called to King Street East and Proctor Boulevard after getting 911 calls about a woman punching and dragging a dog by its leash.
The dog was reportedly injured and bleeding, police say. A woman saw what was happening and confronted the woman with the dog, who then punched her in the face, police say.
Officers later located the suspect at her home, and saw that the dog - a one-year-old brown dog named Magnum — was injured.
A 23-year-old Hamilton woman was arrested and released on promise to appear with a charge of cruelty to animals and assault. The dog was surrendered to the SPCA.
