Owners of two residential properties have been fined for fire code offences.
The owner of a three storey, nine unit, residential building at 309 Barton Street East in Hamilton, was fined $1,500 for failing to protect the doors and windows, which opened onto the exterior fire escape, with a 20-minute fire protection rating.
"Building owners must ensure that they install protective equipment and maintain that equipment in accordance with the Ontario Fire Code," says Chief Fire Prevention Officer Frank Biancucci, in a press release. "To ensure that tenants have an adequate level of life safety to protect them in the event of a fire."
The second owner was fined for failing to remove combustible waste from inside the building, failing to maintain the smoke alarm system in operating condition, and failing to retain test records of the building's smoke alarm system.
The owner of the building at 115 Delaware Ave. received fines totaling $5,500.
