Three Hamilton men in their twenties face charges after a late-night brawl in Hess Village.

After 2 a.m. on Sunday morning, a man tried to force his way into to a bar after being denied entrance. According to police, a patron already in the bar assaulted the man, who allegedly responded by picking up long piece of wood and swinging at his attacker.

The patron and his girlfriend attempted to retreat into the establishment, but she was hit with the wood.

A 22-year-old man, police said, reacted by assaulting the wood-wielding man.

Police arrived on scene and arrested three suspects, all from Hamilton.

A 26-year-old man faces assault with weapons and a different 22-year-old man was charged with assault. A 24-year-old man was also arrested after police say he spat on and kicked an officer who was making an arrest.

Police spokesperson Debbie McGreal-Dinning characterized the interactions that led up to the brawl as a "Hess Village thing that happens every week."

"But it just escalated."
