An early morning fire at a local pizza restaurant has been deemed as suspicious, Hamilton police said.

Police received the call shortly before 3 a.m. Monday morning about a fire at Torino's Pizza and Wings near Upper James Street and Rymal Road West.

The fire caused “extensive amount of damage” to the pizza joint, according to Staff Sgt. Martin Schulenberg.

Torino's is located in a plaza as part of a strip mall, but the fire did not spread to neighbouring businesses, Schulenberg added.

“The damage appears to be limited to the unit itself,” he said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Ontario Fire Marshall will be assisting Hamilton police with the investigation, according to Schulenberg.
