A Hamilton man is facing 38 human trafficking, guns and assault charges after a sex trade worker came to York police last month “badly assaulted by her suspected pimp,” police say.
The next day, officers arrested 27-year-old Jerome Hines, also known as “Shyst” or “Shiest.”
He was charged with:
- Human trafficking
- Material benefit
- Sexual assault causing bodily harm
- Assault causing bodily harm
- Forcible confinement
- Sexual assault with a firearm
- Two counts of uttering death threats
- Withholding or destroying documents
- Possession of crack cocaine for the purpose of trafficking
- And 24 firearms offences
Investigators believe that Hines may be involved with other sex workers, and are asking those victims to come forward.
“In many cases, women and young girls involved in prostitution are forced into the sex trade through violence, threats of violence, coercion and trickery,” a police news release reads. “York Regional Police considers these women and girls to be victims of crime and we are committed to investigating all incidents relating to human trafficking and providing assistance to victims.”
“Investigators are willing to speak with anyone involved in the sex trade who may be looking for a way out or who may require assistance to escape these dangerous circumstances.”
Anyone with information is asked to call the York Regional Police Drugs and Vice Unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7817, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
Hines is due in a Newmarket court on Oct. 23.
