The provincial Special Investigations Unit is investigating injuries a reportedly drunk man sustained during an arrest by Hamilton police Tuesday.

It happened just after 9 p.m., when police were called to the area of Stintson Street and Erie Avenue about a man who was involved in a disturbance on a city bus.

Police say an “altercation” with officers ensued when they tried to arrest him, but after a short struggle he was taken to police headquarters downtown.

When they got there, the man told police his leg was injured. An ambulance crew was called and the man was taken to hospital for medical treatment. Hamilton paramedics don’t release information about the nature of an injury if it’s involved in an SIU investigation, officials say.

The SIU has taken over the investigation. Representatives could not immediately be reached for comment.
