Patients at St. Joseph's Healthcare were evacuated from their floor during an early morning fire inside the hospital.

Fire crews were called to the West 5th campus at about 12:30 a.m. Monday.

Dave Christopher, spokesperson for Hamilton Fire Services, said the incident was a mattress fire in a patient's room. It happened in the facility's second floor.

Christopher was unsure how many patients stayed in the room but say they are continuing to investigate.

All occupants of the second floor were evacuated, said Christopher and moved to other wings of the hospital. Fire crews were on scene until about 2 a.m. to make sure all the smoke had ventilated out of the floor.

Christopher said hospital staff responded quickly to evacuate all patients from the floor and contain the fire to the room before crews arrived.

Lindsay Whelan, spokesperson for St. Joseph's Healthcare, said Patient Services at the West 5th campus will not be affected by the fire.

Because the fire occurred in a hospital, Christopher said the Office of the Fire Marshall has been notified and called to investigate the cause.
