An off-duty Hamilton police officer has been charged with uttering threats.

The 12-year member of Hamilton Police Service has been suspended with pay following a "domestic incident" in Guelph on April 3, Hamilton police said in a media release.

The officer was arrested and charged by Guelph Police Service on Thursday. He is the fifth Hamilton officer suspended with pay from operational duties, although he will be reassigned to administrative duties, said police spokesperson Catherine Martin.

The officer's name is not being released as it may identify the victim, police said.

He has been released from custody and will appear in Guelph court on April 26.
