A Hamilton police officer is facing disciplinary and criminal charges for threatening a woman earlier this year.

Const. Darren Smith appeared at Hamilton Police Headquarters Monday morning as part of a police services act hearing. He’s charged with threatening a woman while off duty on April 3, 2013.

Smith spoke little, just saying “I do” when asked if he understood the charges against him. He said he is reserving a guilty or innocent plea until a later time.

Police service lawyer Marco Visentini says he is consulting with the crown attorney on the criminal charges brought against Smith. A decision will be made at a later date as to which charges will be dealt with first — the criminal or police act charges, he said.

Smith’s disciplinary hearings continue on Jan. 21, 2014.
