Hamilton man to face attempted murder charge in New Year's stabbing
A 29-year-old Hamilton man has been charged with aggravated assault and will face an attempted murder charge at his next court appearance after a stabbing on New Year's Day.
At 3 a.m. on January 1, police officers went to the area of Cannon Street and Steven Street on a report of an attack on a woman. They stopped a man who they say had repeatedly stabbed his long-time girlfriend as he chased her down the streets and back alleys of the neighbourhood.
The woman was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening stab wounds and is recovering, police say.
The man was arrested on scene and charged with aggravated assault. He is being held in custody until January 6 and will face an attempted murder charge at his next court appearance due to further investigation by the police homicide unit and Central Division investigators.
Since the attack was domestic, police are withholding the name of the man arrested as it could identify the victim.
