A Hamilton couple have been charged after a senior resident was found living in "filthy conditions."

Police visited the residence of the 77-year-old woman on July 18 and found the victim living in unsanitary conditions and needing obvious medical attention.

Her 45-year-old daughter and 42-year-old son-in-law were arrested the next day after police executed a search warrant.

Police were informed by a community agency, which had made several unsuccessful attempts to reach the senior, who was under the care of the couple.

"She suffered from neglect as the result of the filthy conditions she was living in," Detective Mike Page from Crimes Against Seniors Unit said.

The senior will remain in hospital for treatment and social agencies will decide where she will go after treatment, according to Page.

The daughter and son-in-law have been charged with failing to provide the necessaries of life.
