Police Act charges against a Hamilton police officer have been dropped after he was cleared of criminal charges that alleged he threatened a woman last year.

Const. Darren Smith was arrested by Guelph police and charged with uttering threats last April. During a police services act phone hearing Tuesday morning, prosecutor Marco Visentini said that Smith has been acquitted of any criminal wrongdoing.

Subsequently, the police act charges for discreditable conduct that Smith had been facing were dropped.

“Given that he was acquitted … I am of the view there is no reasonable prospect of conviction,” Visentini said.

The matter has been officially withdrawn.
