Hamilton firefighters are working to control a fire that has engulfed a turkey barn in rural Hamilton Tuesday.

Twenty-three units have been sent to try to control a fire at barn at White Church Road and Nebo Road, near the airport.

Fire information officer Claudio Mostacci told CBC Hamilton that crews are in “defensive mode” to try to keep the flames from spreading to other barns. Nothing was inside, he said, because the barn was being prepared for a new crop of turkeys.

"No animals were burned," he said. "It looks like it should be contained to just this barn."

So many units were sent to the fire largely because of the location and the heat, he said. "There's no water service here so we have to bring in tanker trucks." Extra units were also brought in to relieve firefighters in shifts.

Mostacci couldn’t yet say how long crews would be at the scene, or how much the damage might cost. "We could be here all afternoon."
