An early morning fire gutted the Crabby Joes Restaurant at 1705 Main St. W. Friday.

Crews were called to the scene around 2:15 a.m., and found heavy smoke and flames shooting out of the back of the building. Additional trucks were called in to douse the fire.

Firefighters entered the building but were forced to pull out because the roof wasn’t safe, officials say. Shortly after, a portion of the roof collapsed.

"It was basically destroyed," said fire official Dave Christopher. "It was quite a fire."

No injuries were reported, and there was no indication anyone was trapped inside, Christopher says.

Damage is estimated at around $500,000. The Office of the Fire Marshal was called in to help figure out what caused the fire because of the extensive damage to the building. That will take most of the day, Christopher says.

"He'll take however long he needs to take," he said.

Firefighters remain at the scene extinguishing small fires and hotspots.
