Fake jewelry scam targeting seniors, police warn
Hamilton police are looking for the public’s help in tracking down people who are reportedly stealing senior’s jewelry from right off their bodies.
The thefts are happening all over Hamilton, police say. Each time, a woman gets out of a vehicle and approaches a senior while talking to them. She quickly places fake, worthless jewelry on the senior as a distraction, and then robs them of their own jewelry.
“Victims report the incident occurs so quickly they do not realize their possessions have been taken,” a police news release reads.
Police say they’re concerned there may be in increase in these thefts with the onset of warmer weather. Police reported similar thefts last year, but Const. Debbie McGreal-Dinning couldn’t say if the two incidents are connected.
Police are reminding seniors to watch their surroundings when travelling alone, and contact police immediately if you have been scammed by calling 905-546-4925 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
