A Hamilton man has been charged after a passenger trying to transport a mattress in his pick-up truck fell out and died earlier this month.

Police report that on the evening of December 1, the two men were in a pick-up truck travelling along the Lincoln Alexander Parkway, where the speed limit is 90 km/h. One man, 22, was riding in the back of the truck bed, attempting to hold on to the mattress.

After the truck passed Upper Gage Ave., the man and the mattress were ejected from the truck, according to police. He was taken to hospital but later pronounced dead.

The driver, a 46-year-old Hamilton man, has been charged with negligence causing death.

Police are not looking for any other subjects in connection with the incident, but Catherine Martin, corporate communicator for Hamilton Police Services, said if there are any witnesses who have yet to come forward, they are encouraged to do so.
