Crews extinguished a fire at the former St. Christopher’s Catholic School in Hamilton’s east end on Sunday.

At around 3:50 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to the property, located on Greenhill Avenue at Kimberly Drive.

Claudio Mostacci, a spokesperson with the Hamilton Fire Department, said the fire, which took place in the gymnasium, had been extinguished by about 4:30 p.m.

He said St. Christopher's doesn't have electricity, so an electrical fire is unlikely.

The fire marshal has been called in to investigate what started the fire, which caused an estimated $1,000 in damage, Mostacci said.

Because of dwindling enrolment, the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board closed the school in 2008.
