Couple charged with stealing $250K from elderly aunts
A Hamilton man and his wife have been arrested for stealing over $250,000 from his elderly aunts, police say.
The investigation started last year, when an 82-year-old woman contacted police and told officers her nephew was stealing from her. Investigators learned that back in 2007, the couple was appointed power of attorney for his now 82 and 84-year-old aunts.
Once both aunts were admitted to a long term care home, a 55-year-old woman proceeded to remove over $112,000 from one woman’s bank account and over $140,000 from the other’s without their consent, police say.
The money was used exclusively to benefit the couple, police say. Det. Terri-Lynn Collings said she “could not go into details” to explain if the money was ever recovered.
The couple was “escorted into Central Police Station” Thursday when they were arrested and held for a bail hearing.
A 55-year-old Hamilton man and a 55-year-old Hamilton woman were both charged with two counts of theft by power of attorney.
