A craving for cigarettes led to a litany of charges against a man who Hamilton police say stole a Mercedes Benz in Halton.
Hamilton Police say they responded, Wednesday afternoon, to a theft at a Big Bee Variety at King St. W and James St. N. where a man stole a pack of cigarettes and fled in a white 2011 Mercedes.
Officers found the vehicle at Queenston Road and Kenora Avenue, but when they activated their cruiser lights while positioned in front of the Benz, the driver put the car in reverse and fled.
Police say the had to call off the search because of the high speed, but the driver ran over a patch of grass, hit a parked car and flipped the Mercedes onto its roof. Police pursued him on foot.
With help from people in the area, the man was arrested by police. He later failed a breathalyzer test and police found out the Benz left on its roof had been recently stolen in Halton.
A 31-year-old from Mississauga, is facing numerous charges including theft under and over $5,000, possession over $5,000, dangerous driving and impaired driving.
