Fresh off a tour opening for The Tragically Hip, Hamilton rock group Arkells have announced they want to celebrate Family Day weekend at home with a last-minute show at This Ain't Hollywood.

After wrapping up the Hip tour in Toronto Thursday night at the Air Canada Centre, Arkells announced the surprise show that will take place Sunday night. With the lengthy tour playing to stadium crowds behind them, frontman Max Kerman said they're looking forward to the familiarity of a smaller Hamilton show.

"Getting an opening spot is always a good opportunity because you get to play for people that maybe aren't familiar with your band. When you headline, you get to play for a bunch of people that know your tunes and are there to see you," he said.

"We haven't done, in Hamilton, a small, sweaty club show in a really long time so I'm really excited about that."

Arkells stopped by Hamilton a few weeks ago to perform on Q Live with Jian Ghomeshi during their recording. It was a short stopover, though and Kerman said they we're really excited to headline a full show in Steeltown again. Local rock group New Hands will open the show, which starts at 8 p.m.

He added all the proceeds of the show will go to the Boys and Girls clubs of Hamilton and the show is more about giving their local fans an excuse to celebrate the long weekend, he said.

"I've been out the last couple of Family Days on the Sunday night and everyone's in a great mood because it's like this sort of unexpected long weekend. Everybody's ready to party," he said.

"I think we need more excuses to celebrate each other more often and February's a pretty drab month so we figured, 'let's throw a party.'"

Tickets for the show go on sale at Cheapies Records (67 King E) and Dr. Disc (20 Wilson St) Friday at noon. CBC Hamilton will also be giving away a pair of tickets to the show. Stay tuned to our twitter feed for details.
