It takes a lot to close schools in Hamilton.

Hamilton schools open as scheduled Monday morning despite weather warnings.

Environment Canada issued flash freezing and and wind chill warnings for Hamilton Monday morning. Deespite the icy and cold conditions both the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board and the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board announced that all schools would be open.

The national weather service says snow, freezing rain and even some rain will continue early Monday morning for a few hours as temperatures rise to near or a bit above the zero degree mark. After the storm centre moves by, it will drag a sharp arctic cold front across the regions this morning.

Environment Canada says temperatures will quickly plunge to several degrees below zero shortly after the front moves through with precipitation likely still falling in many areas as the cold air arrives, many surfaces will likely be wet as temperatures plunge below zero. The service says untreated surfaces may quickly become icy and slippery, leading to suddenly treacherous travelling conditions.
