Two women were taken to hospital after a multiple-alarm fire erupted at an apartment building at Wentworth Street South and Main Street East early Wednesday.

Firefighters were called to the building around 6:30 a.m. A fire started in a third floor unit of a seven-storey apartment building, said fire official Claudio Mostacci.

"There was a lot of smoke showing when they first arrived on scene," Mostacci said. The fire was "electrical in nature" and confined to one unit, he said.

Mostacci said the two women living in the apartment were taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. Damage is estimated at $100,000.
