Police searching for violent machete attacker
Zaya Damerchie is considered armed and dangerous, Hamilton police say
Hamilton police are warning the public to be on the lookout for a man wanted for three separate attacks with a large machete in the last several weeks.
In all the incidents, the assailant appeared to be targeting the same people.
Police say 31-year-old Zaya Damerchie is considered armed and dangerous. Police are advising anyone who sees him not to approach him and to call 911.
The first incident happened on Dec. 7, when police were called about a stabbing in the area of Barton Street East and Ottawa Street North. They found a man in the area with a lacerated forearm, who was taken to hospital for treatment.
The attacker took off before any officers got there, police say, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Then just after midnight on Jan. 12, police were called about a man in the area of Barton Street East and Ottawa Street with a weapon. Police say the same man forced his way into a home and started threatening the same man as was injured last time, again with a machete.
A woman who was living there called police, and the attacker again took off before the officers got there, police say.
Then, ten days later, the attacker went back to the same home while brandishing a machete, police say, threatened the woman who lived there, and then damaged and stole some of her property.
Once again, the man ran off before police could get there.
Anyone with information as to Damerchie's whereabouts is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.
