Hamilton police officer faces charges under Police Services Act
A Hamilton police officer faces multiple charges under the Police Services Act.
Sgt. Helena Pereira is charged with three counts of insubordination, two counts of unlawful or unnecessary exercise of authority and one count of discreditable conduct.
The charges against Pereira include allegations of using unnecessary force against a prisoner, failing to avoid a conflict of interest involving a family member, not readily identifying herself while on duty and not wearing a police uniform while on duty.
If the charges are proven, Pereira faces punishment that ranges from demotion to dismissal, according to the Police Services Act.
A Police Services hearing for Sgt. Pereira was held on September 13, though she did not attend due to an illness.
A subsequent hearing has been set for November 1.
