Hamilton police say they have found the gun they believe was used to kill Natasha Thompson just over two weeks ago.

The 36-year-old woman was shot to death the evening of Nov. 6 outside a Lang Street townhouse. Her 41-year-old boyfriend, Mark Joseph Champagne, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

Video footage from the neighbourhood prompted police investigators to widen the area they were searching to find the gun.

The service sent out its ACTION unit to the area of Main Street East and Reid Avenue on Thursday, around the corner from the Lang Street address where Thompson was killed. The search turned up a handgun hidden in someone's yard, police said in a news release.

Police will now send off the weapon for forensic investigation.
