Hamilton's Limeridge Mall will be open even longer on Black Friday in the hopes Canadian shoppers will decide to stay in the country.

Mall operator Cadillac Fairview Corp. says it will extend the hours at nine of its Ontario properties on Nov. 23, including the one in Hamilton.

The move is part of an effort to keep shoppers at its malls, rather than heading south of the border for the rush of bargains on the day following American Thanksgiving.

Cadillac Fairview says retailers at its malls also plan to host Black Friday promotions.

Canadians flocked to Black Friday sales south of the border, and local retailers have been looking to keep dollars in the country. Last year, Canadians shopping in Buffalo, N.Y. helped boost income from sales tax in Erie County to a record high.

Canadian businesses offering Black Friday deals last year were successful as well. Canadians spent 8.3 per cent more on Black Friday in 2011 than the year before, according to e-commerce company Moneris Solutions.

The Ontario malls participating in the longer hours are Fairview Mall, Sherway Gardens and Shops at Don Mills in Toronto. Also, Fairview Park in Kitchener, Limeridge in Hamilton, Markville in Markham, Masonville in London, and Promenade in Thornhill.

Most locations will open their doors at 7 a.m., while the Toronto Eaton Centre will stay open even longer, starting at 6 a.m.
