Man uses phone while driving and crashes into police van, police say

A Hamilton man is charged with careless driving after police say he was using his phone while driving and ran into a police van.

The officers in the van had minor injuries, and police say the phone user wasn't injured

Police say a driver using his phone behind the wheel crashed into a police van Sunday and injured two officers.

A Hamilton man is charged with careless driving after police say he used his phone while driving and ran into a police van.

It happened just after 4:30 p.m. Sunday. A man was driving a car west on Cannon Street, police say, and approaching Victoria Avenue North.

The car ran a red light at the intersection and crashed into the passenger side of a marked van, police say. 

The officers in the van had minor injuries, police say. The alleged phone user wasn't injured.

"The collision was very severe," police said.

"Through investigation, police learned the driver was distracted by his cell phone at the time of the collision."

"Hamilton Police Service once again reminds the public to put down their mobile devices while they're operating a vehicle."

A 28-year-old faces a careless driving charge.
