A Hamilton man is charged with careless driving after police say he used his phone while driving and ran into a police van.

It happened just after 4:30 p.m. Sunday. A man was driving a car west on Cannon Street, police say, and approaching Victoria Avenue North.

The car ran a red light at the intersection and crashed into the passenger side of a marked van, police say.

The officers in the van had minor injuries, police say. The alleged phone user wasn't injured.

"The collision was very severe," police said.

"Through investigation, police learned the driver was distracted by his cell phone at the time of the collision."

"Hamilton Police Service once again reminds the public to put down their mobile devices while they're operating a vehicle."

A 28-year-old faces a careless driving charge.
