A man was taken to hospital last night after barricading himself inside a central Hamilton home, ending a tense 33-hours of negotiations with police.

Investigators were first called in just after 3 p.m. yesterday, when officers were sent to the area of Robert Street and East Avenue North, near Barton and Victoria.

They blocked off roads in the area and attempted to coax the man out. However, a resolution didn't come quickly. Things stretched well into the night, with Niagara police officers stepping in for a time to give local police a break.

The man finally agreed to come out just before midnight, said Const. Jerome Stewart, which was "most definitely" the outcome they wanted.

"We got in successfully and removed him safely," Stewart said. He could not say if a weapon was involved, but said the man was taken to hospital.

No charges have been laid, Stewart said.
