Police say they are trying to negotiate with a man who barricaded himself inside a central Hamilton home overnight.

Just after 3 p.m. yesterday, officers were sent to the area of Robert Street and East Avenue North, near Barton and Victoria.

Police have an "increased presence in the area," according to a news release, because of "information obtained during the investigation." Police did not specify what that information was.

Officers are now communicating with the man, police say, and tactical units are on scene. "The incident is contained to a residence," the news release reads.

"At this time there are no concerns for public safety however police are asking that vehicular and pedestrian traffic remain out of the area."

East Avenue North is closed from Robert Street to Barton Street East, police say.
