Wainfleet man dies after ATV hits tree and lands in river

A man died in hospital after his ATV hit a tree, continued across a field and landed in Welland River, Saturday afternoon.

The 37-year-old man lost control of the vehicle and it left the roadway, police say

A man died after his vehicle struck a tree, continued across a field before stopping in the Welland River, Saturday afternoon.

The 37-year-old man from the Township of Wainfleet was driving an all-terrain vehicle westbound on Regional Road 45, east of Marshagan Road, when he lost control of the vehicle, Niagara Regional Police said in a release.

Police say he suffered life-threatening injuries and was air-lifted to hospital in critical condition.

He later died in hospital.

Police are investigating the collision, as is the coroner's office.
