Unionized staff at the Summerlea seniors facility in west Edmonton have served notice that they will go on strike Friday morning.

The 65 nursing and support staff, represented by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees, say they will walk off the job at 11 a.m.

According to AUPE, the workers have been trying to reach a first collective agreement since joining the union in late 2011.

The union says that the workers’ wages are below industry standards. They also say that sick time has become an issue in talks.

Summerlea is owned by Chantelle Management Ltd. which is based in Langley, B.C.
