Edmonton homicide detectives are investigating a suspicious death after a woman’s body was discovered in a storage shed in west Edmonton on Wednesday afternoon.
Police were called to the location near Stony Plain Road and 174th Street around 1:45 p.m. The woman’s body was found inside the shed behind the closed MacTaggert’s Brewing Company pub.
Gail Schram-Oleksiw, who works near where the body was found, was shocked when she heard the news.
“I wish that at least if I knew something I could have helped or did something,” she said.
Schram-Oleksiw said at least three to four homeless people lived in the shed behind the pub for several months. The pub has been closed for at least a year.
“They always walk back here and they would always say … ‘Do you have extra food? We’re hungry. Do you have leftovers?’” said Schram-Oleksiw. “I would say no and they would leave.”
Schram-Oleksiw said the group — usually one or two women, and the rest men — were happy. She never witnessed any violence between them.
“It’s shocking,” she said. “It’s so close to where I work and so early in the day. It’s scary.”
An autopsy has been scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday.
