A 26-year-old woman travelling to Edmonton from Brussels through Reykjavik faces drug charges after border guards found what they believe is heroin in a backpack.

The woman was arrested at Edmonton International Airport on May 28 but Canada Border Services didn’t issue a news release until Thursday.

According to Canada Border Services, guards became suspicious after noticing the backpack was still heavy after it was emptied of its contents.

“During this examination the officers found a false back to her backpack and that false back had almost three kilos of heroin concealed inside,” Canada Border Services spokeswoman Lisa White said.

The woman was charged with importation and possession of heroin for the purpose of trafficking.

She appeared in Leduc Provincial Court on June 26.
