A 32-year-old woman was charged under the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act after a small child was left alone in a vehicle on Monday night.

Edmonton Police were called to a parking lot near 39th Avenue and Calgary Trail around 6:30 p.m. by someone who saw the two-year-old girl alone in the vehicle. Officers broke the window and got her out.

The temperature at the time was -17 C. The car was not running and witnesses say the child had been there for about 40 minutes.

When the woman returned to her car shortly afterwards she was charged with causing a child to be in need of intervention.

The girl was cold but was determined to be in good health.
