A woman was attacked by a man dressed in black with a machete near a south Edmonton apartment Wednesday night.

Dee Bernier told CBC News that she had stepped outside the Lendrum apartment she was staying at around 9 p.m. when she was approached by a man.

"Some guy was hiding behind the garbage can. I don't know who he was," she said. "He was dressed all in black. He came up to me and asked me my name and he tried to chop my head off with a machete."

The woman described the weapon as about a foot and a half long. She said the man's face was covered.

Bernier went back inside her apartment where her friend called police.

Bernier received 12 staples on her scalp and four more on her hand to close the wounds.  She was released from hospital Thursday morning.

Police found the machete about a block away.
