Officials at West Edmonton Mall are warning Edmontonians about a phone scam that tries to collect personal information consumers. .

The robocall, which claims to be from the mall, began circulating throughout the city on Monday morning.

In it, a pre-recorded message thanks the receiver for shopping at West Edmonton Mall and says they have won a free trip in a special draw.

The caller is then prompted to provide personal information, including a credit card number.

But Sheri Clegg, who speaks for the mall, says the calls are a scam.

"This is totally not something that West Edmonton Mall is involved in," she said. "This is not the way we conduct business, so people should be alerted that this is actually a scam. It is fraud."

"People should be aware that West Edmonton Mall is not running a promotion giving away a free trip – and if we were, this would not be the way that we would be conducting this promotion," she added.

Clegg said the mall started receiving complaints about the call this morning. Mall security is now working with the police to determine the source of the calls.
