A fire at West Edmonton Mall over the weekend is being considered suspicious, officials say.

The fire broke out early Saturday morning in an outside area used to store cardboard. It caused damage to the outside of the building, and smoke from the blaze seeped inside.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, said Deb Winwood with Edmonton Fire Rescue.

"The fire was contained to that fenced storage area. It is being considered suspicious at this time, and fire investigators and Edmonton police are looking in to it," she said.

The storage area was unlocked when firefighters arrived and probably would not have been difficult to access, Winwood said, adding damages have been estimated at about $20,000.
